And Oscar does not quite fit in it.īut now that world is changing. The real world is vast, strange, and unpredictable. Oscar's world is small, but he likes it that way. Oscar is a shop boy for the most powerful magician in the village, and spends his days in a small room in the dark cellar of his master's shop grinding herbs and dreaming of the wizards who once lived on the island generations ago. On an island on the edge of an immense sea there is a city, a forest, and a boy named Oscar. The Real Boy, Anne Ursu's follow-up to her widely acclaimed and beloved middle grade fantasy Breadcrumbs, is a spellbinding tale of the power we all wield, great and small. I collect illustrated fairy tales and myths, and have in my collection a few other versions of this story, which I hope to eventually review here. It is an ancient variant of the more contemporary Beauty and the Beast tale, and exhibits some striking parallels to Madame le Prince de Beaumont's fairytale of that name. The tale of Cupid and Psyche is of great antiquity, not only in various oral traditions, but in the written record as well, having first been recorded as part of Apuleius's 2nd century novel, The Golden Ass. Separated from all she has come to love, the mortal Psyche must accomplish three inhuman tasks, or relinquish all claim on her beloved Cupid. But a visit from her envious sisters causes Psyche to doubt her new husband, and in a moment of weakness, she betrays his trust. When Psyche is told that she will marry "a creature feared by the gods themselves" she is terrified, but soon discovers that her invisible bridegroom is gentle and loving, and she spends her days in contentment. A picture-book retelling of the classic Greek myth, in which Cupid, the god of love and the son of Venus, falls in love with a mortal princess named Psyche. Warning: This book contains cheesy pick-up lines, amateur stripteases, and voyeuristic intentions – all by dead men. Title: The Ghost Shrink, The Accidental Gigolo & The Poltergeist Accountant: A Tickle My Fantasy story by Vivi Andrews.ĭescription: It’s not smart to piss off a poltergeist… Markosia looks for books that are slightly out-of-the-box, and with GENU you can replace the word “slightly” with “waaay”.ġ st: What is original about the story in “Genu”? Since then – the end of 2019 – a great working relationship started. Tommaso: I knew Markosia as one of the leading graphic novel publishers in the UK, and when we sent GENU’s manuscript to Harry Markos, its founder, he liked it and contact us back right away, which was a really high point for us through this process. And I love the visual challenge in it: the way a silent panel can say more than a thousand words, and the complex art of laying out a page structure.ġ st: How did you come to work at Markosia? That’s something I want to promote and show to the fullest. Writing for a comic book is particularly stimulating for me because so many people still ignore the limitless potential of the medium. Tommaso Todesca: Probably the emotional resonance, that interior loop between writer and reader that can often connect them more than an in-person conversation.
